Stay Safe This Upcoming Halloween

October 19th, 2011 No Comments   Posted in Events, Misc

October is the month of Breast Cancer and Fire Safety Awareness. But we all know that October is the month to prepare for one of the most anticipated holiday events of the year. Halloween is celebrated among all ages. Whether you’re taking the kids out for some good old trick-or-treating or having your own Halloween costume party, it’s a day to dress up as your favorite cartoon or movie character. Before you get all excited and are ready to party, there are a few things you should remind yourself and prepare for when you go out. Halloween has always been one of the most celebrated annual events, but your fun can be ruined by not thinking safety first. Many tragic accidents have happened in the past that prevents people from enjoying the holiday. That’s why remembering to take all the safety precautions will keep you and your family safe and enjoy the rest of the evening. Here are a few friendly reminders to stay safe this upcoming Halloween.

First, we’ll talk about a few costume ideas. Many of us would love to go all out with our costumes, adding every detail to make it look more authentic and noticeable for everyone. But we also have to consider the safety of our own costumes.

Costumes:

  • Try looking for costumes that have bright colors or are reflective. This will make it easier for you or your kids to be seen at night when crossing the streets or in dark neighborhoods.
  • If your costume isn’t bright you can try other alternatives such as adding reflective tape to your costumes or on your trick-or-treat bags. This will provide better visibility for everyone to see.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and costumes that are primarily short. You wouldn’t want your costume to be touching the ground that could cause you to trip and fall or even catch on fire.
  • Vision is also very important for all costume participants. Sometimes masks don’t fit right blocking or limiting your eyesight. Other alternatives to consider is trying make-up or wearing hats. Make sure the hat is the right size so it doesn’t obstruct your vision.
  • As October is also fire safety month, it’s only necessary you search for fire resistant costumes. Other accessories such as wigs should be flame resistant and usually has a label indicating that it is.
  • We all love to carry props with our costumes. It’s what makes the costume complete. If you or your child is carrying a prop like a sword, cane or stick, you just want to make sure it’s not too long or sharp. In case your child trips they can hurt themselves or others around them.
  • Most importantly, carry a flashlight with you and make sure you test it to see if it works. Insert some new batteries if it doesn’t work. You don’t want to end up going out, especially in dark areas without a working flashlight.
  • If any of your children get lost or have an emergency, make sure they know how to call 911.

 Homes:

  • As much as you want to show off how scary the front of your house looks by making it dark, you might want to consider providing a decent amount of light for the trick-or-treaters, especially for the children.
  • Also make sure there’s a clear pathway to your door. You wouldn’t want anyone tripping over toys, plants, bikes or garden hoses.
  • If you have any pets, make sure they are restrained and not running over children. They might get the wrong impression because of people’s costumes.

Trick-Or-Treaters:

  • Parents and responsible adults should always accompany children when going out to trick-or-treat.
  • If you have older children who plan on going with friends, make sure they have a cell phone to contact you in case of an emergency. Have a specific route they must follow and a specific time they should be home.
  • Never go to homes that don’t have lights on their porch.
  • Always use the sidewalk and try to stay on a well-lit path.
  • Always use the crosswalk when possible and cross in groups.
  • If you have younger children, it is recommended that you try to start early while there’s still sunlight. It won’t be too dark and you’ll get home earlier.

You’ll get a better understanding of the product and if it’s the right choice for you. Today’s product spotlight is the Burglary and Fire Safes. Our burglary and fire safes provide the power of two main and important security features all-in-one safe, which is why we recommend this safe. If you’re looking to protect your valuables against theft in addition to fire, then this is the ultimate solution.

You have to keep in mind that each burglary and fire safe has different fire and TL ratings. Some of them can resist forced attempts of up to 15 minutes while others can be 30 minutes. As for the fire rating, some of the safes can withstand 350°F for 1 or 2 hours. Make sure you read the description of the safe to see what type of rating it contains. All the burglary and fire safes are U.L. listed and have been tested for quality to ensure that the safe is able to withstand physical attacks as well as resisting fire all while keeping the stored valuables safe from harm.

To get a better understanding of what it means to be U.L. Listed certified, the Underwriters Laboratories® team up with manufacturers to deliver safe products to their customers through U.L. testing, certification and even follow-ups. The U.L. Mark is very important that every manufacturer has to present a design layout of the U.L. Mark to a U.L. label center for review to make sure that all the necessary information meets the standard format. It’s to ensure that every safe is inspected and checked to meet the overall requirements for safety and security.

One of the products we have available that we recommend is AMSEC’s Burglary & Fire Safe BF1512. Tested under the vigorous procedures of Underwriter’s Laboratories, this particular safe has received certification as a 350°F, One Hour Fire Label and Residential Security Container Burglary safe.

Don’t Let Thieves Steal Your Identity During Your Summer Vacation

June 23rd, 2011 No Comments   Posted in Misc, Safes, Security Tips

We’ve talked about securing your personal valuables at home while you’re out having fun during your summer vacation. We also posted some great information about the specifications and features of the different types of safes. We wanted to point out before you have fun and enjoy the sun and remind you to keep safe and protected while you are out enjoying your time with your family and friends. You have to protect yourself from identity theft and to make sure you properly secure all your important records and documents, especially if you’re traveling this summer.

The most targeted victims to identity theft are travellers. You’re enjoying your time spent elsewhere, laid back and relaxed, that’s when you’re at your most vulnerable state. You don’t want to get pick pocketed and have your wallet stolen only to ruin your vacation. Save yourself the hassle and be fully prepared when you’re in an unfamiliar area. Here are some great tips to stay safe and to keep you from any troubles.

    1. Minimize Belongings – You want to minimize the amount of things you bring with you. The more you bring, the more there is to worry about it and for thieves to steal. Only bring the identification and cards that you need with you. Keep your cards to a minimum. You most likely won’t need your passport if you’re just traveling within Canada. If you’re traveling across the world, you don’t need to carry all of your credit cards. The more credit cards you have, the more hassles you’ll carry with you. If a thief steals your wallet, then they’ll have a lot of options.

    1. Create Copies of Your Identification – You should always store and create copies of your identification that you’ll be taking with you. Take it to your local print shop or use your own printer to scan and photocopy your identification. Also write down and keep record of your passports, credit cards and numbers. Store these copies in a safe place at home and if you need anyone to access them while you’re gone, make sure you trust that person just in case you’ll need them.

    1. Don’t Keep Everything In One Place – Just like losing your wallet, you’ll lose everything inside it. Never keep all your identification information in one place. If you happen to lose your passport or driver’s license in the same wallet or purse, then you’ll have a hard time proving who you are. It’ll be a major inconvenience for yourself and difficult for you to enjoy the rest of your vacation.

    1. Use Security Safes As Much As Possible – If you’re staying at a hotel, you may want to utilize the hotel safes and lockers they have in the rooms to place your important belongings such as jewelry, wallets, cell phones and other valuables. Maybe you decide you want to travel the city and are gone the whole day. There’s no real reason why you should carry more than one identification with you, so you may want to leave your passport or health card in the safe. This will prevent it from getting lost or stolen.

    1. Have Contact Information From Neighbors, Friends and Family – You want to keep in touch with anyone you are close with. There are plenty of ways to communicate long distance such as email, chat, phone, or private messages through social media like Facebook. You don’t want to publicly reveal that you are on vacation because people will find out and know that you aren’t home. It’s always good to contact someone so they know you are okay and they know you.

These are easy and simple tips to protect you this summer, yet we often forget how easily someone can steal our identities and gather confidential information. These are just some precautionary measures so that your safety and summer fun isn’t ruined. By following these tips, you’ll be able to relax and kick back. Have tons of fun this summer, but also be safe. Save yourself the hassles now, and enjoy the rest of your summer.

Mesa's U.L. Classified Fire Safes protect valuables from the effects of a fire or extreme heat.

Features That Your Safe Should Have:

Choosing the right safe is an important task that has to be handled with care and consideration. The safe you choose you will be relying on to protect and keep your valuables safe. With that said, there is large variety of different safe options to choose from ranging from different sizes and prices. It is very important to think ahead and answer a few questions when deciding which safe to purchase. The first question you need to answer is, “What will I be storing in my safe?” This is an important question as it will determine the size of the safe you will be purchasing. If you plan to just store paperwork than you won’t need a large safe but if you plan to store jewelry and other large items you may want to consider something bigger. The most important part of choosing a safe is to understand what features your safe should have and different options you should consider.

Fireproof and theft-proof. When getting a safe, it is very important to invest on a safe that has a stable and protective physical feature. Primary purposes of a safe are to prevent man made and natural disasters from destroying our valuables. With this in mind, we should avail a safe that has either a fireproof feature – the ones that do not crumble or melt under the intense heat of fire, or a theft-proof feature – the ones with dual locks that will tire out thieves when trying to break into a safe. There are a lot of manufacturers that make affordable safes with both features too so it is best to avail one that has both, it is just a matter of investing in the right place.

Thickness:
Your safe should me made of solid steel, with at least close to 1 inch or more for the door and the size of the walls should be close to ½ inch. The thicker the better, this is to ensure that your safe won’t be easily opened by a thief using a simple tool such as a crowbar.

Relocking Failsafe:
This feature doesn’t usually come with every safe. This is one feature that you should definitely invest on. This feature prevents tampering with your safe’s lock, when your safe detects that the lock is trying to be opened without a combination or a key, even if it is opened, it will automatically lock itself again.

Heat Resistance:
A heat resistant safe should last from at two hours of 1850 Fahrenheit (1010 Celsius). This also applies to your safe’s solid materials. Availing a safe should be a long investment, so it should be able to protect itself whether the circumstances are man made or accidental. If your safe can stand two hours of heat before it melts, if a thief is trying to melt the lock, two hours is more than enough time for the thief to get caught and if it is an accidental house fire, it would get you enough time to save your valuables before it burns.
