Burglary & Thefts in a Small Town of New York

July 22nd, 2011

There have been some crimes and burglary attempts that were reported by the police of Nassau County and Lynbrook police departments. This is to remind us that even in small towns where its less populated, burglars and thieves can be present. Just recently in the area of Cedarhurst, New York a group of suspects broke into a home and kept 12 people hostage. They forced them to the ground at gunpoint and raided the area, the police reports.

Around 1 in the morning, four or five males concealed their identities by wearing bandanas over their face broke into the Cedarhurst residence. From the police reports, two suspects had handguns while they stole and robbed the victims while they were lying on the floor. They ravaged through their pockets and stole cellphones, jewelry and cash. They also stole even more money and jewelry from two safes that belonged to the residents.

In several nearby towns, other reports of burglary were also announced. The burglarized areas consisted of an IHOP restaurant; another home in Franklin Square and another home in North Valley Stream. Other thefts that were also reported were a GPS unit that was stolen from a parked car in Lakeview and another one in West Hempstead. Several items were also stolen from an unlocked car parked in West Hempstead.

Sometimes burglaries as threatening and frightening as the first one mentioned above cannot be escapable or avoidable. In cases where your life is on the line, it’s more important to survive than try to save your belongings that could be replaced later on. However in most cases such as car thefts, those can be preventable. Take for instance the unlocked car parked in West Hempstead. Perhaps if you took the time to make sure your vehicle was locked, then this type of incident won’t happen. You also have to remember, thieves are always looking inside vehicles to whatever they can grab. If they see something valuable insight, like your GPS device on the dashboard or even a cellphone lying on the seat, then your car will be more prone to car theft. You have to make sure you keep all your car valuables hidden or inside the compartment after use. It only takes a few minutes, even seconds for a thief to steal your valuables. All we ask is for you to take the time before you leave your car, to make sure they’re locked and that your valuables stay hidden and unseen.

Thousands of car thefts occur every month around the country. It’s just the simple things we forget to do like making sure we lock our doors or making sure the windows are rolled up all the way. There are so many professional car thieves out there, that if they see just one hint to gain access into your car, they’ll take advantage of the opportunity. In a worse case scenario, you’ll find that your car has disappeared.

As Summer Approaches, Homeowners Are Reminded To Prepare for Wildfires

May 3rd, 2011

For those who live in wildfire prone areas, we are reminded to prepare for the potential threats of a wildfire.  We have seen the destructive forces of wildfires and what they are capable of in the recent decade. Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones reminds all homeowners that live in areas where wildfires are a major threat such as Southern California, Arizona or Texas to fully prepare for these disasters.  Just recently, Texas was hit with huge wildfires that spread across different counties of the state.  Hundreds of homes were destroyed and left families homeless.  Now is the time to plan ahead so you are better prepared and ready.

Jones says, “Even with the recent levels of precipitation California has received, homeowners should still be vigilant in preparing themselves and their property for the potential that a devastating wildfire might strike. Simple steps such as creating defensible space around your property and being prepared can save your home or reduce the impact of a wildfire on your home should one strike.”

Jones has a very good point.  Taking even the simplest of steps to prepare for a potential wildfire can pay massive dividends in keeping your home safe or at least reduce the amount of damage. Jones wants homeowners to be proactive and take initiative to fully prepare in the event of a wildfire.  Here, he provides some tips on how to do so:

  • You should keep record of your possessions and their values.  Taking photographs of your possessions will be very helpful especially when it’s difficult to describe on paper or can’t provide proof of receipts.
  • Each photograph taken should be labeled with the appropriate description and information.
  • If you are video recording your items, you should add commentary about each item.
  • Copies of all inventory and documentation such as receipts and model numbers should be safely stored in a safe-deposit box, work office, or at a relative’s house.
  • Your records should also include financial documents such as insurance policies and mortgage information.
  • A free Home Inventory Guide can be found at www.insurance.ca.gov.
  • Homeowners should review their homeowner’s insurance policy with their agent to determine if they have sufficient coverage limits for the dwelling, personal property, and any special characteristics, such as antiques, expensive jewelry, and other valuable collections.
  • Contact CDI at 800-927-HELP to receive a consumer information guide about additional insurance products, or for any insurance-related questions.

Woman Arrested With Connection To Stolen Firearms

April 29th, 2011

Credit: Mason County Sheriff's Office

The sheriff’s deputies of Mason County in Grapeview, Washington arrested a 35-year-old woman on Monday night for her alleged role in the 76 firearms that was stolen, plus other items that was totaled to about $200,000.

The deputies are still in search of the second suspect who is a 45-year-old Grapeview man who they believe is still in Mason County. The two suspects are suspected of breaking into a home in Lake Limerick the morning of April 2nd.  According to the deputies, they believe that an acetylene torch was used to crack into the safes that contained the guns, mostly rifles and one handgun.

The other items that were stolen were coin and stamp collections, toy car collection, swords, knives and ivory.  After searching the homes of the suspects, the investigators were able to recover a few of the items.

According to Dean Byrd, a sheriff’s office spokesman said that at least 32 guns were recovered during the investigation, but the ivory still remains missing.  A man from Shelton had purchased the stolen firearms just four days after the break-in had happened.  He reported the stolen firearms to the detectives and was able to help lead the investigators towards the two suspects.

Byrd said, “He’s been the victim of some crimes and I think he probably had an idea they were stolen. Being a good citizen he was, he called us to check.”

Based on the evidence gathered from the home and the information from the Shelton man, they were able to identify who the suspects were, Byrd said.  The woman will be faced with first-degree unlawful possession of firearms, 32 counts of possession of a stolen firearm and first-degree trafficking of stolen property.  Her bail is being held for $15,000.  As for the man, he is described as white, 5’ 7’’, 152 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.
