Safe Sales Booming Across The Country

August 26th, 2011

With the current state of the economy, it’s no wonder why many people are investing their money in high security safes. Many people are reconsidering where they store all their money and valuables. They’re stashing all their precious belongings into home safes, where they have access to it 24/7 without having to rely or drive to the bank. Others find it more convenient and efficient to be able to store their gold or jewelry safely at home without depending on a bank’s safety deposit box. The disadvantage to having a safety deposit box is that you don’t have access to it throughout the entire day and night. By having your own safe in the convenience of your own home, you can monitor and gain access to it anytime.

The economic situation of the country doesn’t look like it will improve anytime soon that people are making moves to secure their assets elsewhere. With the unpredictable and insecure financial market, that’s the reason most people are looking into stores or on the web for safes. Usually the country’s economic condition can play a large role in what people do with their possessions. As you’ve read in some of our blog posts, many people are desperate raiding or burglarizing homes and businesses because of how critical the country’s economy has been. This day and age, it’s very peculiar to see people storing their own valuables, but in times like this, it seems to be the better and safer way.

If you take a look at our previous post, you can see how common it is to have a home safe in Japan. The people of Japan find it a lot easier and suitable to secure their valuables at home. Even with Japan’s devastating natural disaster, many of the safe owners were able to retain their valuables after their safes were wiped out from the tsunami and lost after the earthquake. A safe can be a huge advantage in cases like this where they’re able to protect, secure and keep your valuable possessions intact even after a natural disaster.

Having your own home safe where you can store all your important documents can be a great investment that can last a lifetime. The one thing you have to keep in mind is that you invest in a high quality safe. If you’re going to store a large amount of cash, expensive jewelry, or simply want to keep sensitive documents such as passports or insurance information, then you need something that will provide the best possible protection.  Usually you want to place your safes in low-key areas of your home or ones that are built strong and heavy that they’re nearly impossible to remove. Most of the time, heavy-duty safes come with pre-drilled anchor holes that allow you to bolt the safe onto the ground.

The one thing you should remember before you invest in your own safe is to educate yourself on the different types of safes. Everyone wants the most affordable safe, but you also want the best protection that fits all your needs. Although bank officials have said that there isn’t any need to worry about your money in the bank since it is FDIC insured, some people simply want the full control over their own assets. Since then, sales of home security safes have increased significantly and should only continue to rise.

Thieves Raid Thrift Store Stealing $2,500 From Safe

June 14th, 2011

One of the most common places that thieves raid and burglarize are the common convenience or liquor stores. In York, Maine the police are investigating a theft that happened this past weekend. A safe was stolen that contained $2,500 in cash plus $400 in credit card receipts from the Leeward Landing Thrift Store.

According to Sgt. Thomas Cryan, he believes that the burglary happened either the night of June 11th or the early morning of June 12th. President of Leeward Industries Inc., Robert Werner, believes that the thieves were able to examine the thrift store while they were open during business hours on Saturday. During their time in the store, they managed to unlock a window. His mother, the manager of the store, Cheryl Werner arrived on Sunday morning only to discover that the window screen was ripped open after it was unlocked. Rob says that the employees consistently check to make sure that the windows are locked before leaving for the night.

Rob said, “Saturday was a particularly crazy day at the thrift store. We believe someone unlocked the window, came back later, sliced the screen, climbed in through the window, went in and rummaged through the store a bit. The money was in a safe bolted on the floor. They ripped the safe off the floor.” He added, “It’s horrible to steal from a charity.” That money was not only towards profits to the thrift store, but Leeward Landing donates to seven other York County food pantries. From their earnings they donate about $4,000 to $5,000 every month.

The store also has tenants who live upstairs above the thrift store. He believes that the theft had to have taken place during after business hours and before the tenants arrived home at 9 P.M. “It was not a quiet operation,” Rob said. “Tools were needed to get the safe off the floor.” Employees also noticed that items were knocked over in the store. The tenants reported that they did not hear anything during the theft, which is why Rob believes it had to happen between closing of the store and the tenants’ arrival.

In addition to the safe being bolted down it was also not in a visible area. He started using safes at three of its other stores within the last 2 months. Burglaries like these occur on a daily basis, yet we always believe that we’ll never become a victim. Rob made sure that investing in a safe protected the store’s profits, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to deter the thieves. Sometimes you have to take even bigger precautions to protect your safe. First, you need a high quality safe. You’ll become attracted to the cheap price of some safes and sure they can protect your valuables, but as the saying goes, “you get what you paid for.” If you’re going to protect your valuables and store a significant amount of cash, you need to invest in a durable and strong safe particularly made out of steel. There are many manufacturers out there that have dedicated their efforts in creating an all steel and high security safes.

You have to make sure your store has the necessary security too, not just protecting your cash. Any professional burglar or thief knows where to look. For any cash handling business, it’s a necessity to have surveillance cameras, alarms and other means of security to protect your valuables. It’s a shame that this particular thrift store had to be burglarized because that money was also going to charity.

Woman Arrested With Connection To Stolen Firearms

April 29th, 2011

The sheriff’s deputies of Mason County in Grapeview, Washington arrested a 35-year-old woman on Monday night for her alleged role in the 76 firearms that was stolen, plus other items that was totaled to about $200,000.

The deputies are still in search of the second suspect who is a 45-year-old Grapeview man who they believe is still in Mason County. The two suspects are suspected of breaking into a home in Lake Limerick the morning of April 2nd.  According to the deputies, they believe that an acetylene torch was used to crack into the safes that contained the guns, mostly rifles and one handgun.

The other items that were stolen were coin and stamp collections, toy car collection, swords, knives and ivory.  After searching the homes of the suspects, the investigators were able to recover a few of the items.

According to Dean Byrd, a sheriff’s office spokesman said that at least 32 guns were recovered during the investigation, but the ivory still remains missing.  A man from Shelton had purchased the stolen firearms just four days after the break-in had happened.  He reported the stolen firearms to the detectives and was able to help lead the investigators towards the two suspects.

Byrd said, “He’s been the victim of some crimes and I think he probably had an idea they were stolen. Being a good citizen he was, he called us to check.”

Based on the evidence gathered from the home and the information from the Shelton man, they were able to identify who the suspects were, Byrd said.  The woman will be faced with first-degree unlawful possession of firearms, 32 counts of possession of a stolen firearm and first-degree trafficking of stolen property.  Her bail is being held for $15,000.  As for the man, he is described as white, 5’ 7’’, 152 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.
