Another Fatal Shooting Involving a 3-Year-Old Boy

March 16th, 2012

You might be wondering if we’re repeating the same news, the same one we wrote about only a few days ago, unfortunately that isn’t the case. This has been Washington’s third recent shooting involving a child.  “It is incredible in light of the other ones,” said Tacoma police Officer Naveed Benjamin. “You would think people would take more care, not less.” We couldn’t agree more with Officer Benjamin. It’s devastating news to find out a child has been shot, let alone 3 in only a span of 2 months, because those parents’ are becoming too careless and irresponsible.

The family had stopped for gas after midnight around 12:30 a.m. The father put his handgun under one of the seats and went outside to pump gas. The mother went inside the convenience store, Benjamin said. Their son and daughter were left inside the car as the son got out of his seat. He found the handgun and tragically shot himself in the head, police said. He was declared dead at the hospital. Fortunately, his sibling wasn’t injured during the shooting.

Investigators and detectives began questioning the parents and have deemed the tragic shooting an accident, Benjamin said. The father did have a concealed weapons permit and charges are not expected, he said. Washington doesn’t have a law that prohibits child access to firearms.

Burglary Statistics: By The Numbers

September 26th, 2011

We’ve posted some very haunting stories and articles about burglaries that happen around the United States. We try to keep everyone informed of the dangers and thefts that occur. We know that everyday there is some type of theft or burglary happening to someone whether it is in broad daylight or late at night. We make sure everyone is aware of their surroundings and that you can never be too safe. Burglaries take place when you least expect it, which is why being prepared beforehand can save you the hassle and stress. Sometimes stories or articles aren’t enough to persuade people into investing in a high security surveillance system or high quality safes. Most of the time people will take that risk in being unprepared, but once they become a victim to theft or robbery, they’ll regret it and start investing.

Why learn the hard way and take that risk in becoming a victim to theft? Why not save yourself the money, stress and trouble of losing all your valuable items? Sometimes it isn’t even the money or jewelry that are the most valuable. Some valuables are irreplaceable like collectibles, family photos or other rare items. You also don’t want to lose sensitive information such as passports; social security, insurance or deeds that can be extremely difficult to replace and even worse, have your identity stolen. We never really discussed statistics or numbers when it came to how many burglaries actually happen within the United States every year. Instead of trying to research and look up the statistics, our good friends at Authority Safes have created an awesome graphic/chart that proves and clarifies some interesting burglary statistics in the United States.

The illustration and statistics chart shows that from reports by the FBI, there are approximately 2,222,196 burglaries that occur annually in the United States! That means if you spread the amount of burglaries evenly over 365 days, about over 6,000 burglaries occur every day.  That statistic alone is astonishing and you usually never realize its significance until you see the facts. Not only does this awesome graphic explain and break down the significance of burglaries that happen everyday, but it provides interesting comparisons too. One of the tidbits on the graphic says that “the average person reads at approximately 300 words per minute; as you’ve been reading, another home was just burglarized.” Just reading that statement can give you the goose bumps. It’s pretty ridiculous how many burglaries do occur annually and it gives you a better understanding of the bigger picture. According to the chart the most common items that have been stolen are cash, jewelry, firearms, electronics and silver. These are usually what most residential homes hide and store in their bedrooms. By that fact alone, you can see how important it is to keep your valuables safe. Thieves have only one thing on their mind, and it’s usually either cash or valuables that they can sell for more money. The time is now to start protecting your belongings and be prepared when the unexpected happens.

Thieves Raid Home Stealing Over $25,000 Worth of Valuables

August 5th, 2011

In the city of Bradenton, Florida a recent burglary has the local towns people worried and nervous as the police are investigating a Palmetto home that was broken into. The burglars stole a 700-pound gun safe that stored a plethora of guns that totaled to 23 different firearms. They also stole a 50-pound safe that was even anchored to a wall, reported by the Sherriff.

A more frightening fact is that the burglars were able to break into the home, raid the area and take two safes without being seen by anyone or creating any suspicion. That must be startling for the neighborhood and those that live close by. The thieves didn’t use any sophisticated techniques or tools to break into the home. They did it the old fashion way, by smashing the front window of the home. It’s surprising to hear that because most burglars would go through the backyard where they would be less exposed to the neighbors.

Once the robbers gained entry inside, it led them into the home office. They raided the office room and two bedrooms where they then stole the two safes that contained multiple firearms. The victim of the burglary was a member of the Manatee Gun Club and told the police that he had no clue who would do such a thing.  The heavy-duty and hefty gun safe held 23 guns that valued at an estimated worth of $15,000. The smaller 50-pound safe that was attached securely on to the wall contained about $7,000 in cash, $3,000 in jewelry and coins and $3,000 in savings bonds. All in all, the total amount that was stolen in valuables was $28,000. That doesn’t even include the damages that were done to the home and the value of the safes.

The deputies went around the neighborhood asking if anyone had seen any suspicious activity in the area, but no one had seen anything. With that being said, the deputies don’t have any suspects or witnesses to go by. We hope that any evidence presents itself that can lead to these suspects. Any person or group of people that breaks into a home doesn’t have the greatest intentions. Even worse, the thieves stole a horde of firearms that could be an even greater threat when choosing their next home to burglarize. Although they took in a large amount of cash and jewelry, they will be coming back for more to target another innocent victim.

Unsolved Mystery: Two Homes Raided & Guns Stolen

July 26th, 2011

An unsolved mystery is still being investigated as two intense and terrifying home raids occurred during the summer of 2009. Two homes were raided where the armed suspects tied up and threatened families and stole their firearms. The two incidents are believed to be linked, as both occurrences were very similar. Police are still hoping that anyone with any bit of information can provide clues or hints on their investigations.

One of the incidents happened to a family of five at Hampton Park. The family had three children between the ages of 12 through 15. The family was tied up with electrical tape and was even held at gunpoint by at least four different men. The incident occurred at about 8:45pm on June 3rd.

The 47-year-old father of three was forced to open his gun safe and the suspects ran off with five firearms that were worth about $3,000. Ever since that horrifying incident, he told the crime investigation’s unit that it has made a lasting impact on his family. “The incident has had a long-term impact on the family’s sense of security, which no one should be subjected to when it comes to living in their own home,” Det-Sgt Rumble said.

After that incident occurred, another similar occurrence happened just six weeks later on August 19th. The incident happened around the same time at 9pm as the 36-year-old man was forced to open up his safe while his 32-year-old wife who is several months pregnant was tied up. Two toddlers were also inside the house during the time. The man was led to his gun safe. The male victim tried to defend himself, but was restrained by the suspects as they forced him to fork up 11 of his treasured firearms in addition to other cherished belongings. The total worth of all the valuables that were stolen from the victim was more than $25,000.

Det-Sgt Rumble mentioned that both the male victims had ties to the Sporting Shooters Pistol Club, which is based in Springvale. The president of the Pistol Club, Mark Penberthy said that many folks were surprised and stunned by the incidents towards its members that other members of the club have invested and enhanced their own home security to take extra measures against burglary and theft.

“All our shooters keep their guns in safes, unloaded, and it’s ironic, as law-abiding shooters, they were completely defenseless in these situations,” Mr. Penberthy said. “Some of our members went out and bought video surveillance systems and commercial safes to heighten security around their homes. We use FBI standard triple-encryption on our membership lists to keep them secure because our concern that shooters can become a target.”

It’s very haunting and frightening that not only are the members of the club are victims to such intimidating crimes, but also their families are being threatened and targeted. It’s already nerve-racking finding someone break into your home, but having to be held up at gunpoint can be emotionally and mentally grueling. Imagine these families who could have lost their lives and were absolutely helpless despite having the right protection to secure their firearms. It will haunt them forever until these suspects are caught and arrested. It leaves a mental scar and could keep you up at night, paranoid that someone will come after you. That’s why you can never be too safe and you have to become aware of your surroundings. Here at Security Base, we’re always concerned not only about the safety and protection of your products, but also yourselves. You never know when an incident like this can happen to you.
