Most people understand that security is something that can’t be compromised but it becomes difficult for large businesses whose doors are open publicly during the day with lots of foot traffic going in and out of their buildings.  This can be a huge security hazard as important company assets and documents can potentially be exposed publicly to anyone. This is why it’s very important for most companies to be able to allow access to specific individuals to designated secure areas only.  Deploying an access control system can dramatically increased security and isolate points of un-authorization not only from the public entering the buildings but internally among employees as well.

There are several forms of access controls. Among these variations are card based controls, electric locks, digital locks, and keypad controls.  If you’ve stayed at a hotel recently than chances are you’ve used an access control card before.  The card allows you to enter your room at will but yet the system is flexible enough to disable if your card if you lose you it.  From a business stand point, the card allows you to grant individual’s access to certain areas but can also keeps a running log of who access a particular area and at what time.  This audit log helps identify accountability and simultaneously increases security.

The type of access control system which your company will use will vastly depend on the size of your company and your security needs.  For many smaller retailers, having a simple keypad access control lock will be enough to keep customers out of inventory rooms.  However, bigger companies may have to segment their security depending on the specific personnel.  Your access control installation will also vary depending on the physical elements of the building you are trying to secure.  To properly gauge what access control is best for your company take time to answer the following questions:

  • How many employees do you have and will they have the same access level?
  • Do you have a lot of clients, customers, or vendors coming in to your building on a daily basis?
  • How much flexibility do you need on your control?
    • For example, do you have a big turnover rate in employees and you need to be able to grant control or take back control often?
  • Do you know the value of the areas you are trying to secure?
    • For example, the computer room may be more valuable than the document room, so the access control security may differ.

Once you have these questions answered you will be able to properly gauge what type of access control security will best fit your business needs.
