A Woman In Agony After Losing Sentimental Items

May 27th, 2011

Most, if not all people hold onto something from the past that they truly care about.  Those valuable items are what people hold dearly and it provides sentimental value. Whether it maybe sports cards, dolls, toys, photos or other rare collectible items, these items are priceless and can never be replaced.

Unfortunately for a woman in the UK, she was left devastated after she was burglarized and the thieves stole her jewelry that included a gold ring, gold chain and diamond ring, but most importantly, her prized collection of old postcards. The woman who was burglarized is 51-year-old Christine Leveridge who said she was in “complete despair” after losing 600 or so cards of old Dewsbury and district.  The postcards were not only sentimental value to her, but also held historic value with which she could have shared with friends and family.  The collection featured documents and pictures of Dewsbury during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The burglars raided her home in Nab Lane, where they wrecked her home and stole jewelry in addition to three safes that contained the postcards. They broke into the house from the rear door and found one safe under the stairs and two more in an office room.  What is even more surprising is that the fire resistant safes were also bolted into the floor.  However, Mrs. Leveridge said, “They just ripped them up,” as she is desperate to get the cards back.

She also says the postcards are not worth much in terms of money value, but have a great amount of sentimental value in which she has built her collection for over 25 years and even wrote a book about them.  To rephrase how valuable the postcards really are, “those cards are my life,” she says.

Sometimes its not just money, jewelry or important documents you need to protect, but also rare collectible items that are personally valuable to you.  Those items are just as important to keep secure.  For Leveridge, those were more valuable than her jewelry.

AMSEC FIRE SAFE - UL918

This is another prime example of why you need a heavy duty, all steel constructed safe. Anything you treasure and hold dearly, especially old family photos need to be kept safe, not only from theft, but also fires.  Leveridge had the right idea to have a fireproof safe, but unfortunately, the safes were not as secure against theft.  With a heavy duty safe that provides all the strength and protection, it also weighs a considerable amount so that any thief will have a frustrating and difficult time removing it.

As Leveridge mentioned, the safes were just ripped off, which leaves us to believe that these safes were lightweight and were not difficult to remove at all.  Keep in mind, whenever you have something that valuable, especially items that carry sentimental value, you’ll need a better safe that can provide the best possible protection and security.

High Speed Chase Ends In Suspect Arrest

May 23rd, 2011

Picture courtesy of NWFDailyNews.comIn Florida, the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force from Pensacola engaged in a suspenseful high-speed chase pursuing a man from Indiana who was wanted for a large number of burglaries.  The primary suspect had raided spots in at least five different counties in Indiana where he stole a variety of rifles, handguns, electronic equipment jewelry, safes and other valuables worth about $25,000, which was recovered from his home in Corydon, Indiana.

The suspect was Zachary Taylor Frey, 22-years-old, who led the U.S. Marshals task force in a long high-speed chase.  The dangerous and risky chase happened during heavy traffic around noon on U.S. Highway 98 and State Road 87, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Office.

Frey led the officers through the streets and making dozens of u-turns.  At some points, he even took the risk of driving through on-coming traffic on U.S. 98 to deter the police officers. Fortunately it led to a dead end, but ended up at a school during operating hours, according to reports from the state.

While the chase went on, Frey even attempted to drive directly into the police vehicles as the law enforcers saw him smiling and taunting them like it was some sort of game, according to the report.

“Watching him laughing and smiling while engaged in such obvious disregard to the safety to others just sums up his character,” said Inspector Dominic Guadagnoli of the U.S. Marshals Office.

Guadagnoli’s vehicle was hit by Frey head-on when they were in the Holly-Navarre Middle School’s parking lot, which eventually ended the high speed pursuit.  “When we saw him head down that street and knew where it would lead to we thought the worst,” Guadagnoli said. “I’m just glad it was us he hit instead of children or someone else.”

Luckily, none of the officers were injured during the result of the crash.  Frey was immediately apprehended and arrested, and put into the backseat of the police vehicle.  In Frey’s vehicle, the officers had found a loaded 9mm pistol magazine.  At the time, Frey was also staying at motel where officers also found a loaded 9mm handgun, but the magazine that was found in his vehicle seemed to be for another gun, according to the report.

Different Types of File Cabinets

May 19th, 2011

In the market today, you’ll find that there are a multitude of filing cabinets available to you.  If you have an abundance of important records, private documents and confidential files, then purchasing a quality file cabinet is what you need.  File cabinets are perfect for storing and keeping your files organized. If you work with a large number of clients, cases and need storage for your over-stacked piles of paper in the corner of your office, then it’s time to invest in one.  Whatever the case maybe, you will have to know the different types and features of file cabinets.

Depending on the amount of paperwork you need for storage, file cabinets can hold as much as two to four drawers or more.  Filing cabinets also come in a vertical or horizontal shape that accommodate to your workspace. Those vertical or horizontal shape cabinets can also vary in width sizes. The horizontal cabinets can come in different sizes such as 31’’, 38’’ or 44’’, which is great for those who prefer to keep their filing cabinet at a low height and takes up more space horizontally. Vertical cabinets are usually for those who prefer to maximize their ceiling space and do not mind having the elevated filing system. The paper size is also important to remember because you want to have a drawer that can fit the correct size of your documents.  The two most common sizes of paper are legal or letter.  Make sure when you are purchasing a file cabinet; you have the correct file cabinet size that will fit all your documents and records.

Not only will you need to choose the right type and size of filing cabinet for your office or workspace, but you should also purchase a file cabinet that offers fire protection.  Most filing cabinets today offer fire resistant filing cabinets to protect all your vital records in case of a fire emergency.  Some file cabinets have been tested to withstand extreme temperatures and are certified as a 2-hour fire and impact rating by Underwriter’s Laboratories.

Tips On How To Improve Your Home Security

May 16th, 2011

When it comes to protecting your own personal valuables, one of the most precious things to protect is your own home.  Most of the tips are common sense, yet sometimes we take it for granted.  Here are some tips from what cops and crooks say you are doing wrong.  Take it from the experts and burglars who have seen and were involved in break-ins.  It’s pretty simple, you’re an easy target and they know your home is vulnerable.  Now that it’s summer, many people will be taking a vacation, but you never want to come back home with all your valuables gone. So here is some advice that will benefit you.

“About half of all break-ins aren’t break-ins but walk-ins,” says Bob Portenier, a former burglar. “Families get in a hurry in the morning – kids going to school, running late for work, doctors’ appointments, what have you – and forget to take that one or two minutes to check the doors and locks, usually on the back side. You have a pet, you let it out to do its business – and then forget the security French door or sliding glass door.”

Many people who have an alarm system for their home forget to actually turn it on.  A security survey says 1,038 U.S. homeowners; 43 percent of them said they at least occasionally don’t turn it on when they’re not home.  19 percent of people say they occasionally leave their doors unlocked when they’re out, and 26 percent say they at least occasionally leave windows unlocked when they’re gone.

As for windows and doors, another access point to a home is the garage.  If you leave your garage door open, then usually that leads to a door to your home.  Usually that door is unlocked or isn’t as strong as the exterior doors of your home.  Plus once the burglar gets in, neighbors can’t see anything and can take their time in breaking in that door.

We all know privacy is important, but you also have to consider if it can be too much privacy.  Any tall hedges or fences that hide windows and doors give thieves more time to break-in because they’re covered up, says Walter T. Shaw, a former burglar and co-author of “A License to Steal.”

“When we targeted a house, we would approach the door and look in – the quality of furniture, whatever there was – to give us an idea of how these people spend their money,” says Portenier. “So with mirror-tinted windows, it eliminates that.”

When you go on vacation, of course you would love to share and keep your friends informed through Facebook.  However, those can also tip-off people you occasionally don’t speak to or others that your home is up for grabs during the weekend.  Wait until you come back from your vacation to share what you did. Lieutenant John Dzwlewicz of the New York City police department suggests a trick, put some inexpensive kids’ toy on the lawn.  What you can also do is ask your neighbor to park on your driveway so it seems like someone is home.
